Why I started Sirenetta.

Hi Siren Babes!
I wanted to introduce myself to those of you who don’t know me; I am Jess Oliva(JFO), the founder and designer of Sirenetta Swim.
I am 28 years old, recently married my man of eight years and we have two fur babes named Khione(6) & Arrow(5). I love eating food, laying on the beach, hanging with my little fam and working on Sirenetta! I grew up in Jersey and always had a love for swimwear and the ocean. I was one of those kids who was only allowed one bikini for an entire season growing up so maybe it’s a complex from that but who knows lol. My mom had five other kids to get suits for so that gets expensive quickly! Honestly, I’d do the same with that many kids running around. Once I started making my own money I spent most of my money on bikinis but then wished they were made differently in sizing and style. I am someone who has no butt and a large chest so nothing fit me properly. In 2014 I started sketching my own designs. My brother was actually making a Cosplay outfit at the time and suggested I try making one of my sketches. So, I ordered the fabric and started sewing. Honestly before this my only sewing experience was making a Spongebob outfit, yes a Spongebob patterned shirt and pant set lol with my one Grandma and needlepoint sewing with my other Grandma. No actual sketch to product experience. I didn’t even know how to make a pattern, I just started measuring, cutting and sewing. They actually started turning out pretty good. I had the idea to start making them for my friends so I actually went into a Victoria’s Secret with a measuring tape and my sketch book, took every size of underwear they had into the dressing room and started writing down each size’s measurements. The attendant definitely thought I was going to steal something and started knocking on my changing room door. Luckily I was almost done and quickly got out of there lol. Once I started making different sizes I actually realized I am not making suits that could hold up in the ocean. This was right before I went away to college to become a math teacher so I put my little hobby on pause for the moment.
While I was away at school I started having panic attacks multiple times a week. This was a combination of being away from home for the first time, taking six classes, rushing a sorority and some financial issues. But when I would go home I would keep sewing my designs and it made me so happy. I then realized I wanted to invest in Sirenetta instead of becoming a math teacher. I dropped out in December 2014 and started researching manufacturers. Launched my first line in 2016 and second in 2018. I created Sirenetta with the goal to help women feel comfortable and confident in their bikini bods. I also wanted to help the ocean. That is the reason we have bathing suits to begin with! All our suits are packaged in a reusable mesh bag our customers can use for their beach essentials, traveling and washing their suits. We don’t give our customers any single-use plastics. We also donate 1% of our profits to ocean conservation.
I was running Sirenetta while working full time from 2015-2018 without ever giving it 100% of my time. Sometimes even working two other jobs. I wound up taking a break from it completely after launching my second line in 2018. After having that time off I realized Sirenetta is what I want to be doing with my life. I am now giving Sirenetta ALL of my attention and currently working on launching a new line with more inclusive styles and sizing for December 2022/January 2023 (finalized date to come). We will have sizes XS-3XL to start. A variety of colorways, a new reusable bag will be launching and much more on the horizon! We are so inspired by our customers, family and friends that we actually got measurements from every woman we knew to make sure our sizing is correct and fit actual women. We regularly send out polls to our customers as well. Asking them what colors they want, what styles they are comfortable in and even sizing labels! Sirenetta is made for our customers, not the other way around. We believe they should have a say! We also want to have more of an impact on our oceans. This upcoming year 2023 we are going to start having regular beach clean ups!
I am so excited to be back, following my passion, something that feeds my soul. I don’t even care if it makes me money. That’s not why I’m doing it. I am here for you, the ocean and my happiness. I already am happier without even making a profit yet. I’d say that’s pretty damn successful if I do say so myself! :D
Side note: Our blog posts won’t be this long in the future. I just had a lot to share for the first one back! Also, I am sure there are a ton of grammar mistakes. I said I was going to be a math teacher, not an english teacher. It is what it is. Thank you so much for being here <3
